The wet on wet painting technique is used to unlock various creative possibilities of the watercolor medium. By
using this technique, the painter can explore a natural yet erratic color dispersion and effects. This is sometimes
used in abstract
oil painting lessons.
It can be used to create a solid background, as a focal point to the subject or as a method to create images by
painting directly into the water.
The colors can be blended directly on the paper using this technique so you won’t find it difficult to do
this.
Before starting with wet on wet painting technique, it is best to
learn the washing technique. This covers a large position of the paper. The same principle is applied to this
technique. Just secure a piece of heavy water color paper to a board with tape.
Then, load a large round brush with a paint sand tilt the boar. Brush the paint on top of the paper and watch as
the bulk of paint water drop to the bottom line. Repeat with another stroke but be sure to not overlap the
first.
To be able to paint using the wet on wet painting technique, just follow the instruction for the wash technique,
except to use a brush and water but without the paint. This will give the paper a consistent wetness without
creating puddles or deep lines.
You can also try using different paint brush loaded with paint to create the image. But first, blend the colors
with a different brush dipped into another watercolor and start to paint. Keep in mind that the closer the colors
are, the more they blend. So be sure to retain more of each original color and leave more space in between.
When adding some effects, it is best to gain control over the flow of the painting into the water. Adding table
salt to the paint while it is still wet will alter the way the paint looks when it dries. But there are some ways
to avoid this. Just gently brush off the salt when the painting is dry to reveal the crystal like residue on the
painting.
When making wet on wet painting technique, it is always best to be prepared. Have the essential things set up
before painting. This will not only help save more time but will also avoid delays on the painting. If you have all
the things you need, you’ll have lesser chances of making a mistake.
